Tom's favorite restaurants and things to do in Adams
County, Highland County and the surrounding area.
There are a FEW,,, Family Restaurants who have been in business for many sucessful years.... One of these is the "Lake Manor".... It's located about 3 miles south of Mt. Orab, Ohio,, on US State Highway 68.... This is a winner ! No reservations taken... 937-444-3500.
Why go to the "Y" Restaurant ? Because of the good food,, always.. Located at the intersection of Rt. 62 & Rt. 321.. About half way between Rt. 32 & Hillsboro, Ohio, on Rt. 62. This Restaurant has been there for years..... You can't argue with success ! The good news is,,, they (the son of the owners of the Y) has opened a second restaurant on Rt. 50,, West of Hillsboro.. It's called TY's Place...
UPDATE, THE FIRESIDE RESTAURANT HAS MOVED TO,, Georgetown, Ohio. When you go through Higginsport, Ohio (on State Route 52)...... You can count on 2 things: 1. A speeding ticket.. 2. Good food at the "Fireside Restaurant"... Sit back and relax in front of the fireplace,, with a hot drink, and observe the many sailing ships, that adorn the walls........ The friendly service will warm you as well as the fireplace...... NOTE: The food is much cheaper,, than the speeding ticket.... and more digestable..
Visit "Margie's Southern Cafe",, & Bed and Breakfast....

It's DOWNTOWN Maysville,,, at its best... Walking distance to the Ohio River
Front..
Years ago,, a common phrase was "a 1-2 punch".. By doing
this, your opponent was on the floor, knocked out..... This happened to my wife and I last
Saturday night... We had a wonderful dinner at the "General Denver Hotel", and attended a great show across the street,,, at the "Murphy Theater"...... We were floored at having such a
spectacular evening out.... Almost like we were in New York.. Only it was Wilmington, Ohio.............
And for these 2 events the cost for both of us was around $50.00..... The Hotel had a fine food menu, with a great choice of wines.. (Local Wines Featured).. The Theater is one you must see.. Built in 1918,, and restored to its beautiful self...
I could go on,, but its easier if you acquire a schedule from the Theater.. 50 West Main St.,
Wilmington, Ohio 45177. Hotel is at 81 W. Main St., Wilmington, Ohio 45177.. 937-383-4141
email: Innkeeper@Generaldenver.com The web-site is:
www.generaldenver.com The innkeepers are Mark & Molly Dullea..... (On Theater nights reservations are a must).....
Good Luck and God Speed...
There are times when words can not express a thing... I think this is true of Mc Clain High School, in Greenfield, Ohio.. (see Greenfield site on www.highlandcountyohio.com).. For you art lovers, or just the curious, visit this truly unbelieveable school... More like a museum.. Many years ago, a wealthy couple built this large High School with their own money.. The wife traveled all over the world buying art treasures to put into the school.. One piece of art is only one of two in the world.. It would be wise to call ahead, to reserve a tour through the school. It is located at 200 N. 5th. St., Greenfield, Ohio.
My recommendations are how I found these places to be when I visited them....I know places change sometimes...I hope you enjoy them as much as we did....I have simple tastes, so I won't be talking as a Gourmet Diner.. I leave that area to the rich experts...The way I see it there are 4 types of restaurants: Fast(factory) food, Mom & Pop, Upscale, and Gourmet.... I normally eat in the middle two...
Loveland
Ohio / Chateau La Roche
A medieval castle not far from Adams County
When you are in Aurora, Indiana, definitely stop at the "Coachlight
Inn". A family restaurant and bar, 223 3rd and Main Street. Today it's an
effort to find a nice restaurant that serves "human food". My wife and
I stayed at the Casino Hotel in Rising Sun, Indiana overnight. We won a little
money on Wednesday night at the casino, so Thursday morning when we left for
home, we decided to go west a couple of miles to the small town of Rising Sun
for breakfast. It's a clean little town with a few shops. With the thousands of
dollars from the Casino, it has built an enormous fire house. I pity the poor
fire that starts in that town! I imagine most of the able-bodied men in town are
on the Fire Department. We drove around town looking for a restaurant to eat
breakfast. It was about 11 a.m. on a beautiful morning. Finally we stopped to
inquire about a place for breakfast. The lady at the gas station said there was
none... now this is a good size town with thousands of dollars pouring from the
casino??? I must be missing something???? We left Rising Sun and drove east to
Aurora, Indiana, about 10 miles. Here we found the Coachlight Inn. Believe me,
it was worth all the frustration and hunting. I was glad the poor little rich
town of Rising Sun didn't have breakfast. The kindly mature waitress at the
Coachlight recommended the steak and eggs breakfast. It was outstanding. On the
walls of the restaurant are numerous painting by local artists (for sale). If
you only stopped for a drink, it would be worth it just to view these paintings.
I think in the near future we will only have fast food and pizza joints
available to us. But in the meantime, search out and support these wonderful
places that still serve food... like the Coachlight.
Over Maysville, Kentucky way, there is a well kept secret...The French Quarter
Hotel...Under the old bridge, on the downriver side...On a warm evening sit out
on the dining room patio, overlooking the Ohio River. If you're not delighted
with the view and the food, I'd really be surprised...
If you want to impress your sweetie, take her to the Lake
White Club, for dinner...Good food, overlooking beautiful Lake White...
You
won't be sorry... It's an easy drive from West Union, 41 north to 32, 32 east to
104, 104 to 552, turn left on 552....you're there...It's outside Waverly,
Ohio.... I'm sorry I didn't know about it sooner.....We set our wedding date the
day we were there, as the sun was setting, and the ducks were swimming by...
If you find yourself in Hillsboro, Ohio....Visit Magee's Restaurant.....Friendly waitresses, good food, down to earth prices...All the locals call this home, from judges on down... It received a 4 star rating from a restaurant group....It's across from the south side of the Court House.
On a windswept March, sunny, Sunday afternoon, we visited
the quaint Ohio
River town of Augusta, Kentucky. Our purpose for the trip was to dine at
the Beehive Tavern. This town is known as the place where Rosemary Clooney
spent some of her last years. Her brother Nick has a home here.. (search on
Google for "Beehive Tavern") You will find an abundance of information
on
these subjects....The trip was well worth it for both the fine restaurant,
and the beauty of this river town..... Augusta is located west (downriver)
from Maysville, Kentucky, about 12 miles, down Route 8....There is also a
ferry that runs across from Ohio,, it leaves from State Route 52, to
Augusta...
One of the most beautiful places lies just a short way (about 30 minutes) from West Union....It's on State Route 125 before you get to State Route 52....The area it's entrance is called Friendship, Ohio.....An appropriate name....The place really stretches across 2 counties....The western part is hosted by Adams County.........Sunshine Ridge Road runs from Adams County into this vast Forest.........."Shawnee State Forest & Park", (Also Shawnee Golf Course and Marina located on Route 52), The Lodge at Christmas is breath taking....The large fireplaces glowing on the Christmas decorations drinking a warm cup of cheer and smelling the burning wood... It doesn't get much better....Unless you're sitting in the Hot Tub, by the indoor pool looking out at the snow piling up on the windows.. The place is orientated to the whole spectrum of people... Families, couples, groups.. I've used this place for family outings as well as weekend get aways.. The dining room is beautiful, and the food good.. A nice bar adjoins the dinning room......The Park Rangers supervise the whole Park on a 24/7 operation....Needless to say peace reigns supreme at this retreat......For more information see the link on this web site... Go, enjoy something the State of Ohio has done right.....
